Shawn Bassett's Carbon LS-Z /features/vehicle-features/shawn-bassett-s-carbon-ls-z /features/vehicle-features/shawn-bassett-s-carbon-ls-z

When our friend Shawn Bassett picked up his 1972 Datsun 240Z, the plan was simple: track days, some nostalgia, and a manageable project. Naturally, it didn’t all go exactly to plan. Years of wear — and rust — had crept into the chassis and floor, turning what looked like an exciting new toy into a long-term commitment. Bassett doubled down, tearing into the car’s bones and beginning a transformation that would eventually take him from local circuits to the clouds at Pikes Peak.

_DSC8673.jpg

If you saw the car at the 2018 SEMA Show, you might remember a sharp-looking Z that hinted at purpose. That exposed carbon fiber version feels like a draft compared to what sits on track today. The evolution since then is the product of countless revisions, tear-down winters, and a growing skillset through Bassett’s shop, Attacking the Clock Racing. The name seems especially apropos here, because time was both the opponent and the motivator.

_DSC9659.jpg

Power comes from a Texas Speed–built 427 LS, force-fed by a compact Garrett G42-1200 turbo. The combination is good for 850 horsepower, which is plenty for such a lightweight chassis. Even with a tight engine bay, the routing looks intentional thanks to Vibrant components, fabricated pipes, and some custom turbo plumbing. A Dailey dry sump setup keeps oiling reliable under race conditions, and Radium Engineering manages the fuel delivery demands cleanly. Cooling is handled by a ducted front end paired with CSF components, because climbing a mountain of thinning air at pace isn’t exactly gentle on intake temps.

_DSC8740.jpg

Underneath, the original unibody has been supplemented — and in many places, replaced — by a tube chassis and a Pikes Peak–ready roll cage. Moton 3-way coilovers and SPL suspension parts dial in the grip, while custom knuckles from FDF Fab help with geometry. A StopTech Trophy big brake kit handles stopping power, backed by HEL brake lines. Toyo RS1 competition slicks are the only logical rubber choice. At full load, aero matters more than aesthetics, but this car does both. Attacking the Clock Aerodynamics contributes a wide array of carbon pieces, from the hood vents to the flat bottom, while an APR chassis-mounted dual-element wing towers over the hatch. It’s not subtle, but it’s not supposed to be.

Inside, the heritage of the 240Z’s original dash remains, even as modern race functionality takes precedence. A Haltech IC7 digital display sits front and center, while auxiliary gauges nest cleanly into OEM-inspired shapes. The brains of the operation come in the form of the Haltech Nexus R5 ECU, coordinating traction control, power distribution, and data delivery without the usual tangle of separate systems. A paddle-shift enclosure flanks the steering wheel, commanding a BMW M3 dual-clutch transmission through an HTG control unit — a seemingly unlikely combination that works far better than expected.

_DSC9959.jpg

Safety is handled with Sabelt gear, a custom aluminum rear firewall, and a Lifeline fire suppression system. An OBP pedal box and ATC button box keep ergonomics in focus. Even battery placement has careful thought behind it, utilizing an Antigravity ATX-30RS housed in a rally-spec enclosure from Mele Design Firm.

_DSC9974.jpg

The car’s aesthetics still matter to Bassett, but not in a show-car sense. Attacking the Clock Racing’s builds tend to share a certain posture: functional, aggressive, and distinct without being loud for the sake of loudness. The team’s work stands out not because of polish alone, but because each line and opening on the car has a job.

_DSC9985.jpg

And yet, for all the parts lists and technology, the story of Bassett’s 240Z is more about persistence and growth. The rusty track toy became a SEMA build. The SEMA build became a time attack weapon. From there, the ascent — pun absolutely intended — continued to one of motorsport’s most demanding hillclimbs. Progress didn’t come all at once, but you can see it in every panel and weld. Racing the clock doesn’t end at the finish line. It continues in the shop, after hours, and until the next revision. The proverbial hill just keeps getting taller, and Bassett seems content to keep climbing.

Some builds begin with intent, others with circumstance. For John Revell, it was somewhere in between. He calls it the car that chose him. A G37 was always on the list, but life, family, and career came first. When the time finally opened up after his divorce, the Infiniti became a way forward.

 igolow1_-_Pas_Mag-01.jpg

Wheels were the first move—though not exactly a proud moment in hindsight. “Boy, did I pick some ugly ones,” Revell laughs. The reset came after connecting with another G37 owner, and not long after, a set of Work VS-XX found their way onto the car. That shift carried him into his first real build, his first trophy, and what he describes as “feeling like Dennis”—an inside joke about the overwhelming rush that hits every time his car earns recognition.

 igolow1_-_Pas_Mag-44.jpg

The timeline since has been steady and full of stylistic leaps. Joetech handled a boost setup in 2018–2019, but by 2020, Revell took on a bigger challenge himself. Installing a SoHo Motorsports air-to-air kit in his garage gave him something beyond horsepower: confidence. That sense of accomplishment traveled with him to shows, where the G landed in ŔÖ˛Ą´«Ă˝ Issue #173, claimed Best of Show awards at Slammedenuff, and earned attention from multiple outlets.

 igolow1_-_Pas_Mag-54.jpg

Ideas kept coming. Revell designed a cowl delete, which Solkreations365 produced—a first for the Infiniti platform. Not long after, he saw copies circulating, including engraved versions. A custom carbon fiber front bumper followed, eventually replicated and mass-produced by a larger company. For Revell, those moments confirmed that his build was influencing the G community.

igolow1_-_Pas_Mag-06.jpg

With momentum behind him, the next step was the one he once swore he wouldn’t take: a widebody. In late 2023, he committed, sourcing an AY Dynamics kit and having it remade in carbon. RK Customs handled the install and paint while Revell sat out shows for the year, waiting to debut the completed project. The car’s first appearance in its new form resulted in another Best of Show. “Job complete,” as he puts it.

 igolow1_-_Pas_Mag-124.jpg

Mechanically, the car is as layered as the exterior. A Stillen Vortech V3 supercharger paired with a SoHo air-to-air conversion, Injector Dynamics fueling, and a host of chrome, carbon, and tucked details define the bay. R1 Concepts brakes, Air Lift suspension, and VIP Modular wheels support the new wide stance, while an extensive list of carbon fiber additions sharpens the bodywork. Inside, racing seats, Alcantara, carbon fiber, and a Workshop 12 Tesla-style screen reshape the G’s cabin into something that feels purpose-built.

 igolow1_-_Pas_Mag-15.jpg

For Revell, the car is about more than spec sheets or awards. It’s been a series of challenges—each building on the last, each adding another layer of validation. From the first trophy in Ennis, Texas, to seeing his ideas recreated by others, to debuting a widebody that redefined the car once again, the G37 has been both a project and a personal evolution. Now, with shows across the country on the calendar and SEMA somewhere on the horizon, Revell’s build feels less like it’s reached its peak and more like it’s continuing to grow—just like the driver behind it.

James Horne's 2010 Nissan 370Z /features/vehicle-features/james-horne-s-2010-nissan-370z /features/vehicle-features/james-horne-s-2010-nissan-370z

When James Horne picked up his base-model 2010 Nissan 370Z four years ago, he didn’t see it as a compromise. His best friend owned a 2016 Nismo, but even without the factory upgrades, Horne knew his Z wouldn’t stay stock for long. What began with an exhaust and a tune quickly spiraled into a full-scale project that would carry him across the country—literally.

0G8A9544.jpg

As a long-haul truck driver hauling hazmat, Horne couldn’t pick up parts the way most builders do. Instead, he arranged meet-ups in Walmart parking lots, truck stops, and interstate exits to grab pieces sourced from Facebook Marketplace. With only two days at home each week, he split the workload between personal wrench time and trusted specialists who could move the build forward while he was on the road.

0G8A9469.jpg

That network became essential. Local drifter Gavin Burkard connected Horne with Ian Adcock of Enlow Garage, who handled the engine and drivetrain. B&K Auto Upholstery in Shreveport rewrapped his Braum Alpha-X seats and interior panels in peanut-butter leather. For paint, Horne trailered the car to Houston, where Junior Reyes at JR Prestige Auto stripped the Z to bare panels, repaired hidden bodywork issues, and laid down a clean respray.

0G8A9483.jpg

Under the hood, the VQ now breathes through a SOHO Motorsports supercharger system, fed by CJM fuel upgrades, Injector Dynamics 1300cc injectors, and a Walbro 525 pump. Tuning duties fell to Moncef Faik at AdminTuning, who dialed in the ECUTEK setup. A built transmission, South Bend clutch, and Nismo 3.9 differential handle more than 600 horsepower at the rear wheels. Rolloface brakes, Precision Forged wheels, and Air Lift Performance suspension round out the chassis.

0G8A9505.jpg

Horne saved one of the most ambitious jobs for last: the audio. He wanted a 1990s and early-2000s fiberglass-heavy install—something bold both visually and sonically. After months of saving, he dropped the car off at Inov8Audio in Houston, where Roland built a full DD Audio system with custom fiberglass enclosures in the trunk and doors. Despite storms causing week-long power outages, the finished product matched Horne’s vision exactly.

From roadside part pickups to relying on small shops across multiple states, Horne’s Z is a testament to persistence. The final product is far more than a widebody, boosted 370Z. It’s a build shaped by long drives, long nights, and the people who stepped in when Horne couldn’t be home to finish it himself.
